Claiming this School Year for Christ

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Please share this post with students in your life!

1 Timothy 4:12-13

School is in full swing for me. This year God has been convicting me about working hard for His glory. Here are a few thoughts of encouragement for my fellow students:

Have the Right Mindset

God has you in this season as a student, and you can find joy in that! Try this mindset: “God is preparing me now for the plans he has for me in the future. I am in the perfect season to train for and even begin fulfilling the purpose he has for me. Who knows if He may use this learning in me to further the gospel? I am going to study for God’s glory!”

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11 (“thought” could also be translated “plan” or “purpose” here)

Look for God in Every Subject

I believe that we can learn something about God in every subject. In History, we see how He has orchestrated and worked in the events of the past. In Science, we study His creation and learn how creative and powerful He is. In English, we learn how to communicate more effectively, which is useful in sharing the gospel. In Bible, we study God’s very word. Even in Math, we see God’s faithfulness (if you’re not convinced, check out this video: www.christianperspective.net/blog/math-evangelism-video).

Study the Bible

Don’t get so busy with your school subjects that you neglect studying the most important Book. If you’re feeling stressed, go to God’s Word. If you’re afraid, go to God’s Word. If you’re feeling great, go to God’s Word! Our school knowledge may be useful, but the knowledge that God shares with us in His Word has eternal impact!

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

Guard Your Testimony

Others will judge you based on how you work. If you call yourself a Christian and yet do not do your best work or work with a good attitude, what will that do to your testimony? Even if

Colossians 3:23

others don’t see how you work—I’m homeschooled, so I’m often alone while I do school—, God does. God wants our best, and He will bless us for working well.

“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.” Proverbs 22:29

Abide in Jesus

It is going to be difficult to claim this year for Christ if you are not abiding in Christ. As we saw in our verse study earlier this week, abiding in Christ is the foundation for glorifying God. I pray that our desire would be to ultimately glorify God in our schoolwork.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. […] Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” John 15:5, 8
